We asked Petersen Structural Engineers (PSE) to explore three options:

  • Option 1: Save a portion of the wall in-situ (in place)
  • Option 2: Relocate a portion of the wall to a different area of the site
  • Option 3: Relocate the railing piles from the top of the reservoir

Below is a summary of PSE's analysis of each option.

Unfortunately, Option 1 and Option 2 are not feasible from a budget and risk perspective due to the age and condition of the existing concrete.

Option 3 — salvaging the unique railing posts — is the only feasible option for saving a portion of the reservoir.

The posts could be repurposed to line a walking path or other amenity selected during the landscaping process. A concept sketch is shown below.

Note: This sketch gives a general overview about how the railing could be reused. Final decisions about foliage and the location and length of walking paths will be made under a separate landscaping design process.
